This premium Carl Zeiss mid-range zoom lens is designed for full-frame and APS-C E-mount cameras, delivering superlative image quality and consistent performance. Covering a 24mm to 70mm focal range with a constant maximum aperture of F4, it enables uniform exposure settings across the zoom range.
The lens' unique circular aperture design creates a pleasing "bokeh" effect, with smoothly blurred backgrounds. Conventional aperture blades often produce unappealing polygonal shapes in defocused areas, but this lens maintains an almost perfectly circular aperture from wide open to 2 stops down, resulting in a more natural, organic defocusing.
Chromatic aberration, a common issue with longer focal length lenses, is dramatically reduced through the use of ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass. This delivers superior contrast, color quality, and resolution, even at large apertures. The advanced Super ED glass provides further compensation for chromatic aberration.
Aspherical lens elements significantly reduce spherical aberration while also decreasing the lens' size and weight. Spherical aberration is caused by differences in light refraction across a conventional spherical lens element, degrading image quality. Specially shaped aspherical elements near the diaphragm realign the light rays, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at the maximum aperture. Well-designed aspherical elements can also be used elsewhere in the optical path to minimize distortion.
The most advanced aspherical (AA) elements feature an exceptionally high thickness ratio between the center and periphery. Producing these AA elements requires the most sophisticated molding technology to consistently achieve the required shape and surface accuracy, resulting in significantly improved image quality and accuracy.
The superb Carl Zeiss T (T-Star) multi-layer coating virtually eliminates lens flare, internal reflections, and light scattering that can degrade image quality. This coating contributes to outstanding contrast and uniformly excellent resolution across the entire frame. The T symbol only appears on lenses where this high level of performance has been achieved throughout the entire optical system.
Gyro sensors in the lens detect even the slightest movement, and a precision stabilization lens is shifted to counteract any potential image blur. Inherited from Sony's high-end professional camcorders, this exceptionally quiet and effective image stabilization benefits both still and video capture.
The lens' internal focusing design maintains a constant overall length during focusing, and provides fast autofocus performance with a short minimum focusing distance. Additionally, the front filter thread does not rotate, making it convenient when using a polarizing filter.
